This is the Ocean

The slow breath of waves

And the endless flow of change

Inspiring you to feel

How everything is moving within you

Rising and falling with the tides

Touching the winds and the lights

That define our lives

It's looking deep into the past

To find the future

A soft force

And the calmness in the chaos

Calling to you come close

And find afhome in your own waters

Have you ever gradually fallen in love

Not the explosive kind

Not that frantic torrent

But nice and slow

A rhythmic motion

One day at a time

My story started with the Rhine

On that languid summer

When I stumbled upon it!

The walks turned into years

It's little details etched into

The corners of the heart by now

After a decade still here

Falling in love a little everyday.

That summer eons ago

When you and me met across the fields

To the aroma of magnolia and daisies

Cheerful laughter all around

That summer of buttercups and honeyed hearts,

was it real or an illusion!

As my memory plays tricks in these last days

I often hear you

And see the house where our dreams had a place

And we lived with abandon.

 A sea of Red..

The sea of red,

Intoxicating, fiery

Shades of passion

Blending into the late autumn colors!

 Jaipur Diaries. Page 8.

If you go to the 'Johari Bazar' and manage to look up from those tempting shops with tantalizing jewelry and enticing clothes, you will see these rooftops - above the beautifully painted shop names - in the 'pink' that lends its name to the city.

Another 'Chattri' that took my heart away. Love the drooping pointed corners, the spikes and the panels - everything dripping with beauty and symmetry!

Jaipur Diaries. Page 6.

A hand painted version of the one of the most beautiful gates in the city palace of Jaipur. I am totally in awe of the details, the design and the beauty of this entryway.

Pillars and arches - transforming a simple verandah into a magical place! Each pillar perfectly rounded, engulfed in beautifully shaped petals at the base and the top - each one a work of art. It was almost meditative to draw each one, though with imperfect lines and proportions.

Jaipur, you are gorgeous and I miss you!

'Bawadi' or stepwells - an amazing architectural feat of the yesteryears, meant to harvest water and provide respite from the smoldering summer heat. These look like a maze of steps, numerous and symmetrical - like an inverted pyramid with a well at the bottom. Very characteristic of Rajasthan!

The quintessential 'chattri' that is seen almost everywhere in the Rajasthani architecture. A perfect blend of sandstone and marble, adorning terraces and verandas. Reminds me of so amny places in Jaipur, in particular, the gardens of Kanak Vrindavan - a quiet green space at the foothills of Amer.

Amer Fort - sprawled in slumber and proud of its majestic heritage - the crowning jewel of Jaipur! One of the most visited forts in Rajasthan. Brings back a lot of childhood memories of accompanying guests and visitors, and proudly showing them the architectural treasures within!

Magic on the Mount

"The wild ram embodies the mystery and magic of the mountains, the rocky canyons, the snowy peaks, the fragrant alpine meadows, the gray slide rock, the icy, dancing rills fed by snowbank and glacier, the sweet, clean air of the high places, and the sense of being alone on the top of the world with eagles, the marmots, and the wild sheep themselves. My first stab at finger painting - a cactus!

"Take the rose - most people think it is very beautiful: I don't care for it at all. I prefer the cactus, for the simple reason that it has a more interesting personality. It has wonderfully adapted itself to its surroundings! It is the best illustration of the theory of evolution in plant life." - Charles Proteus Steinmetz

The Untold Story

"But how?" my students ask. "How do you actually do it?"

You sit down, I say. You try to sit down at approximately the same time everyday. This is how you train your unconscious to kick in for you creatively. So you sit down at, say, nine every morning, or ten every night. You put a piece of paper in the typewriter, or you turn on the computer and bring up the right file, and then you stare at it for an hour or so. You begin rocking, just a little at first, then like a huge autistic child. You look at the ceiling, and over at the clock, yawn, and stare at the paper again.  Then, with your fingers poised on the keyboard, you squint at an image that is forming in your mind -- a scene, a locale, a character, whatever -- and you try to quiet your mind so you can hear what that landscape or character has to say above the other voices in your mind."

Golden Tales

'Golden Tales'

If you are a dreamer come in
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar
A hoper, a pray-er, a magic-bean-buyer
If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire
For we have some flax golden tales to spin
Come in!
Come in!

The natural state. Our moods change. Our lives changes. Our feelings for each other change. Our bearings change. The song changes. The air changes. The temperature of the shower changes. Accept this. We must accept this. "

You know you are an artist when...

You know you are an artist when....(based solely on personal experience)

  1. Almost all of your furniture has smears of paint on it.
  2. Every wall in your home has one or more of your works and there is still a stack gathering dust.
  3. You love getting your hands dirty with paint - in your eyes it is better than any manicure.
  4. There is always a 'work in progress' on your easel and a few more behind the door.
  5. You've accidentally dipped your brushes in coffee and drank the water you rinsed your brushes in.
  6. You look at blank walls and get excited at the prospect of how you could fill them up
  7. You click pictures of telephone wires and imagine how you would paint the raindrops sliding off them.
  8. You wonder that colors you would use to paint the shadow of the street lamp while you wait for the bus.
  9. You think in blues and oranges with hints of yellow when looking at a stormy sky.
  10. You've spent considerable time thinking about how sunlight changes colors over the course of the day.
  11. You sit in meetings and mentally draw caricatures of people.
  12. You can't help admiring rusted containers and peeling paint and thinking of what great abstract art they would make.
  13. When sitting in a bar, you look at every beer bottle and cocktail in terms of how 'paint-worthy' it is.
  14. You've had disagreements with your spouse if your sketchbook qualifies for the list of 'essentials' when packing light for your holiday.
  15. You have bouts of paint-marathons from time to time - especially the week before you have planned an exhibition.
  16. You look at everything as a subject for painting - the neighbor's dog, clothes on the laundry line, the delivery truck, people at the train station - everything.
  17. All you want in your dream house is a studio.
  18. For you a white plate is never white - its made up of a fifty shades of grey.
  19. You remember the day  you got your first box of paints.
  20. You laugh at the absurdity of all of the above but wouldn't change a thing.
